Macadamia nuts production to escalate

THE production of macadamia nuts in Chipinge is set to increase as more farmers in the district are keen to increase productivity and profitability.

Preparations for the 2021-2022 agricultural season have hit top gear following the onset of the first rains received in Chipinge and farmers are stepping up efforts to surpass last year’s successful yield.

Chipinge-based horticulture expert, Mr Charles Mhandu, said adequate macadamia nuts nursery have been set aside in readiness for planting as soon as enough rains are received.

He urged farmers to procure the required inputs and follow proper farming methods so as to ensure increased productivity of the crop as most are now looking at expanding the production area of the high value export commodity.

Mr Mhandu added that the move to escalate production is in line with Government’s thrust of enhance food and security nutrition under National Development Strategy (NDS) 1.

Macadamia nuts have been produced on a fairly bigger scale in Chipinge and Chimanimani districts.
