MACHESO CHEERS ORPHANS

MUSIC superstar Alick Macheso says his tough upbringing always pushes him to do everything he can to cheer up children who are in need.

The singer said this after donating food hampers and a water tank to Kutenda Orphanage in Masembura, Bindura, on Wednesday.

Macheso said the life of children at an orphanage resonates with his upbringing – having been raised by a single mother who depended on menial jobs on farms.

“Firstly, I want to thank those who have taken the initiative to look after these children at this orphanage. It’s not easy being an orphan or coming from such a background.

“You don’t need to grow up as an orphan to know their plight but your upbringing is enough for you to know what they go through.

“It is my wish to always cheer up people from such backgrounds whenever I get the chance,” said Macheso.

The Charakupa hit-maker said the initiative will see him visiting several orphanages and old people’s homes around the country.

He said he decided to start the campaign in Mashonaland Central, which is his home province.

“This programme will see us visit different parts of the country with the initiative. I chose to start here because I was born and raised here.

“We came up with this initiative with my management who are responsible for raising funds,” he said.

Kutenda Orphanage director, Prosper Maponda, said while they appreciate the donation from Macheso, having him at their home will go a long way in motivating children.

“Look, we really appreciate this gesture by Baba Macheso, the groceries and other items he donated to us.

“But, to us, it’s not only about the donation. His visit and taking time with the children here is also appreciated. Our children felt happy and motivated, I felt it.

“We have many children who look up to these celebrities and this will help them grow in confidence and believe that they can make it in life.”

The donation comes a few days before the high-profile sungura festival to be held at Bindura Country Club.

The festival is being headlined by Macheso and will also feature Sulu Chimbetu, Nicholas Zakaria, Peter Moyo, Simon Mutambi, Somandla Ndebele, Tindo Ngwazi, Paradzai Mesi, Sugar Sugar and Cheso Boys.
