THREE suspects are set to appear in court this morning, facing charges of committing a series of armed robberies in Montgomery, on the outskirts of Bulawayo.
Aaron Gatsheni (38) from Gwanda, Abel Mukuli (20) from Binga, and Emanuel Moyo (19) from Filabusi—were apprehended by detectives from the CID Homicide following a tip-off from members of the public.
The trio is accused of terrorising residents while armed with machetes.
According to Bulawayo provincial acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, one of the robberies took place on February 23, around 10PM, when the gang targeted Bekimpilo Ncube’s residence while armed with a machete.
“Upon arrival, two of the accused mounted two separate windows, while the third accused knocked on the complainant’s bedroom door. The complainant, who was asleep, woke up and asked who was at the door, but there was no response,” she said.
Assistant Inspector MSEBELE said after approximately 10 minutes, one of the suspects jammed the blade of a machete between the door and the door frame, causing it to protrude into the bedroom.
“The accused person threatened to stab the complainant while demanding money. The other two suspects, at the windows, also threatened to kill him. The complainant pleaded with them not to harm him,” she said .
One of the suspects forced the bedroom door open and stole the complainant’s LG cellphone before fleeing.
“The complainant managed to identify two of the accused, who reside at a neighbouring plot. He informed his neighbour and reported the incident to the police the following day,” said Asst Insp Msebele.
She further revealed that the police, acting on a tip-off, were able to locate and ambush the suspects.
“The third accused was found in possession of the black LG cellphone, which the complainant positively identified. The second accused was found with a machete with a wooden handle, and the complainant was able to identify the first and second suspects from the robbery,” Asst Ins Msebele added.
