A MEMBER of a machete welding gang, which allegedly struck and robbed a couple at their Kuwadzana home and drove off with the victims’ car, has been nabbed.
Mxolisi Nkomo was briefly placed before magistrate Stanford Mambanje where the State applied for a warrant for further detention.
This is meant to allow police to finalise investigations before they place him on remand.
The court heard that on January 7, the couple was sleeping in their bedroom when they were awakened by Nkomo, and his accomplices, who were already in their house.
They were armed with machetes and were covering their faces with balaclavas.
The gang members started demanding money, which the wife indicated that they didn’t have.
This prompted the robbers to threaten the couple with the machetes and they surrendered US$200.
The robbers demanded more money but the couple insisted they did not have more money to give to the gang.
After realising they were not going to get more money, the robbers allegedly stole three cellphones, a 15kg gas tank, a Jack hammer, various suits, a Toshiba laptop, clothes, blankets and groceries, which they loaded into the couple’s gold Toyota Corolla, and drove away.
Nkomo was arrested after one of the cellphones stolen at the scene was tracked to him through the person he had sold the phone to.
Lancelot Mutsokoti appeared for the State.
Nkomo returns to court on Saturday.
