A 34-year-old man from the Madlambuzi area in Plumtree, Matabeleland South province appeared before the local magistrates’ court charged with the murder of his wife after he suspected her of lacing his food with poison.
In a post on X, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the tragic incident occurred on July 17 in Ntambama village, Chief Masendu in Madlambuzi.
According to the NPAZ, a misunderstanding had ensued between Nkomo and his wife on that fateful day. Nkomo allegedly found his wife sprinkling something he suspected was a charm into his porridge and he ordered her to eat it.
When she refused to eat the porridge, the situation quickly escalated into violence. “During the scuffle, the wife fell and the accused person struck her on the head with a pick,” the NPAZ said.
“The now-deceased fell and the accused person struck her with a pick before striking her again on the head with a hammer. The now-deceased died instantly with the hammer stuck on her head.”
Nkomo allegedly later removed the hammer from the deceased’s head and placed it on the ground. He was later arrested and subsequently remanded in custody until August 1 as investigations continue.
The NPAZ urged the public to desist from violence and resolve their disputes amicably or seek third-party mediation.
