Madondo targets Russian opponent

THE historic national female Super Flyweight championship bout between Revai Madondo and Patience Mastara is now hanging in the balance, as the latter has not yet committed to the fight, which is scheduled for the 7 Arts Theatre on July 13.

Madondo and Mastara’s fight was one of the major highlights of a bill that is being promoted by the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy.

“There has been an issue between the boxers’ camps, so the fight is doubtful, but everything else is in the right direction.

“We expect boxing lovers to throng 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale on July 13,’’ said Charles Manyuchi.

According to Madondo’s camp, Mastara has not signed the contract and they have since shifted their focus to a non-title fight in Moscow, Russia.

The 29-year-old Madondo, who also has an African Boxing Union championship fight lined up later this year, is now set to fight against Karina Tazabekova in Moscow on July 11.

Tazabekova is a 34-year-old Russian pugilist with 14 wins and 11 losses while Madondo has an 8-3-1 record.

Madondo’s manager and trainer, Clyde Musonda, confirmed the latest developments.

“I can confirm that Revai (Madondo) now has a fight in Russia on July 11 and she is fighting over six rounds against Karina Tazabekova.” Musonda said.

Musonda is also the director of Delta Force Boxing.

“Mastara never signed the contract and that’s the reason my boxer will go for a warm up fight in Russia.”

Madondo and Mastara’s fight was supposed to be a game changer as it would have been the first national title contest in years.

However, Madondo’s camp believes the latest development will not deter their plans to turn the Highfield-bred pugilist into an international champion.

This year could be defining for Madondo who is also set for an ABU Super Flyweight title fight between August and September.

The 29-year-old has been in the trenches for years, but a title has eluded her.

“I believe my time will come.

“We keep on working hard so that when a fight comes up, we are always ready,” she said.

Madondo belongs to the same stable as former World Boxing Council Interim Super Bantamweight champion Kudakwashe “Take Money” Chiwandire, who also hails from Harare’s high-density suburb of Highfield.
