Madzibaba is diabetic

the first time during the late Cephas Mashakada’s funeral wake, said he was diagnosed with diabetes in 2002.
“I only got to know about it when I quit truck driving in 2002. I went to the doctors and I was diagnosed with diabetes and since then I have been cautious about what I eat,” Madzibaba said.
Obviously not the usual funeral talk, Madzibaba could not eat at the funeral wake insisting that he had a strict diet and described diabetes as a terrible condition that needed strict monitoring.
“The only thing that has kept me going is that I follow a strict diet and I don’t just eat anything at anytime. Honestly, diabetes is a terrible condition,” Madzibaba said.
Asked why he had kept it under wraps, Madzibaba said it had become apparent that the condition needed attention just like other chronic ailments. The late Mashakada succumbed to diabetes and renal failure last week. First Mashakada had his left amputated after an ulcer like lesion erupted on his left leg in 2002.
However, Madzibaba also revealed that besides his dietary requirements, he manages his sugar levels well because he doesn’t drink any alcohol.
“Chizvarirwo handisati ndambobata doro. ( I have never tasted alcohol since I was bporn),” he said.
But for Madzibaba who gave up the steering wheel for his beloved guitar says his diabetic condition is more manageable now because he’s now a full-time musician.
Back then he had to spend hours in long queues – perhaps at the Beitbridge Border Post or Chirundu waiting for clearance for his load and a long journey with a slow truck.
The goatie-bearded guitarist has seen it all in music business and has released a number of chart toppers and nurtured a lot of musicians including Orchestra Mberikwazvo leader Alick Macheso.
Many artistes have also passed through his hands earning himself the nickname “Senior Lecturer”.
Some of hit tracks to his name include “Ndine Mubvunzo”, “Zomvelamvela” and “Mabvi NeMagokora”.
