GREETINGS to all our valued readers. It is good to interact again on this platform which seeks to enhance sporting activities within religious institutions.
2017 is upon us and the Sport and Religion column is still alive and kicking. Hope you all had a blessed festive season. It is my wish that the year 2017 be a season in which the women will stake their claim in sports within faith based institutions. Come on mothers and sisters, 2017 is the year for a healthy body and soul!
Let me also remind our special readers that this platform is a space for all religions. In that vein, the Sport and Religion column will have carry sports stories from the Muslims, Christians, traditionalists and the Nyau community.
Buhera’s New Year soccer bash
It’s just eight days into the year but at New Life Ministries, it is already game on. The Apostle Joseph Murata-led church hosts a 10-team soccer gala at Nerutanga Shopping Centre in Buhera this afternoon.
The church’s congregants from Harare, Murehwa and Buhera will tussle it out in the heart of Buhera. “We expect to have a fruitful 2017 in terms of both ministry and sports, so we have decided to start with a tournament in Buhera.
“This is our way of starting the year on a high note and we hope there will be a huge turnout,” said Apostle Murata.
Madzibabas hog the limelight at Chibuku Stadium
Our contact from the Chitungwiza Christian Soccer League tells us that the exciting league concluded on December 22 with the Transfiguration Cup final played at Chibuku Stadium.
Johane Masowe eChishanu hogged the limelight as the Madzibaba showcased their football skills in front of an appreciative crowd. They reached the final in which they lost 0-4 to Freedom in Christ who walked away $100 richer.
The season completed with the crowning of the 2016 Chitungwiza Christian Soccer League record champions, Nyatsime who won it for the third time on the trot.
“Nyatsime were handed their trophy for the third time in a row. It is now theirs for keeps,” said Mr. Fungai Ngwerume, secretary general of the League.
Go well coach
It was a bleak Christmas for the Anglican Diocese League as the league’s secretary Mr Tawanda Mutemererwa lost his brother Kennedy who was also the coach at Mufakose United Football Club at the time of his death.
deThe late Kennedy Mutemererwa passed away on December 13, a few weeks after guiding Mufakose United into the Northern Region Division One League without a loss in 30 matches.
“We didn’t have any activity during the Christmas period. Unfortunately we lost my brother Kennedy Mutemererwa who passed on after a short illness,” said Mr Mutemererwa.
