Kambeva (46), Nyarai Nhandara (41) and Fungai Kamudande (35), who are aligned to independent candidate and former MDC-T aspiring candidate for Glen View South constituency Amon Mukomondera, clashed with supporters aligned to MDC-T parliamentary candidate Paul Madzore in Glen View 3.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident.
She said on Sunday, Mukomondera and his supporters were distributing fliers and posters while other youths were holding a banner.
“On approaching the intersection of Glen View Way and Patrenda Street, Mukomondera’s youths, who were holding a banner reading, “Madzore ngaaende hapana chaakaita for the last 15 years ari muParliament’’, “Ngaataure kuti mari ye CDF (Constituency Development Fund) yakaenda kupi’’, were confronted by Paul Madzore’s supporters,” she said.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba said Madzore’s supporters tried to grab the banner from the supporters, leading to a clash.
In the process, she said, three women from Mukomondera’s faction were assaulted and sustained injuries.
“Three of Madzore’s supporters were positively identified before fleeing from the scene. Glen View police attended the scene and investigations are still in progress,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.
She implored the public and political parties to desist from engaging in unnecessary scuffles and conflicts.
“The police will not hesitate to apply the provisions of the law,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.
For the past few months several MDC-T supporters have been arrested on allegations of tearing other parties’ campaign posters and for their involvement in violent activities countrywide.
MDC-T has unleashed a wave of intra and inter-party violence in a bid to not only trash the political environment to abet its call for poll postponement, but to also provide fodder for its Western allies to discredit the poll.
The terror campaign began last year, but was intensified from January, with over 45 cases being recorded countrywide since the beginning of the year.
In all the recorded cases, MDC-T supporters were at the forefront of attacking their colleagues or those from other political parties, especially Zanu-PF.
