Madzvamuse confident ahead of Umlazi tourney

ZIMBABWE Handball Federation president Amon Madzvamuse is confident that the crop of players who are going to represent the country in the upcoming Umlazi Invitational tournament in Durban, South Africa, early next month will lift the Zimbabwean flag high.

Six local teams — Churchill, Allan Wilson, Kwenda, Daramombe, Great Zimbabwe University, and Harare’s Girls High School — will be joining South African teams in Durban at the tournament scheduled for December 14-16.

Harare’s Girls High School, Great Zimbabwe University and Daramombe will field the women’s teams with Churchill, Kwenda and Allan Wilson fielding the men’s teams.

Teams will play at least four games each depending on the number of teams the South Africans decide to field for the round-robin matches.

Madzvamuse said the contingent representing the country had a winning culture.

“South Africa has highly competitive teams so, in our preparations, we are working flat out because we know it will be challenging.

“We have the best possible representation this year considering that we are sending Churchill who are the reigning champions, Harare’s Girls High, who emerged victorious in the recently-held tightly-contested Presidential Tournament ahead of a visiting Mozambican team.

“Daramombe, who are relatively considered ‘new kids on the block’, but have proven they are a force to be reckoned with after they won the NASH provincial championships in Masvingo and they also did very well during the Presidential Tournament.

“As the sport continues to grow and spread in Zimbabwe, we are keen for it to take root in tertiary institutions as well and that’s why we included Great Zimbabwe University, in addition to that they have displayed a lot of skill in the tournaments that they have been able to attend.

“We also have Kwenda and Allan Wilson as newcomers to the large scale competitive platform and we hope that the exposure will help them grow stronger and so that they can learn one or two things about competing on a large scale,” said Madzvamuse.
