“Basically, it’s a strategy to introduce ourselves into other markets. We have a cordial relationship with Amayenge and they are enthusiastic about the upcoming project with us.
“As you already know, the group did well in both Zambia and Zimbabwe so this time we want to revive that relationship because we understand their music and they also do the same,” he said.
Mafriq burst on the scene with the hit song “Ndichakuudza Sei” off the “Chamhembe” compilation album and now they are looking at spreading their music into Southern Africa through collaborations.
Mafriq was one of the first successful groups in urban grooves movement, a result of Government’s 100 percent local content drive. It started as a trio comprising Discord, Pauline Gundiza and Tunga Tee, then morphed into a duo after Tunga Tee pursued his other passion — fashion designing. The other two members Discord and Pauline, Roki’s ex-wife, have also gone solo.
However, according to Discord the new project together with Amayenge will not be anything like their previous hit “Aphiri”, but instead will sound more like the new Zambian pop music sung in both Shona and Bemba.
So far, Zambian music is proving to be popular among Zimbabweans with the sultry R&B singer Mampi leading the pack as well as rapper Slap Dee who also performed during the Real Deal concert featuring Akon and Sean Paul at the National Sports Stadium.
The “Queen Diva”, as Mampi is known to her fans, topped the charts with her two hit singles “Walilowelela” and “Chikondi Fever” which recieved massive airplay on the Big Brother Africa reality show.
