MUKUVISI Manufacturing Co-operative Union (Appex) has assisted 13 traders at Magaba affected by a fire that broke out on Saturday, with US$200 each to help resuscitate their businesses.
In a statement, the union’s vice-chairman, Cde Christopher Makopa, said they have also installed a water pump to assist in future disasters.
“On May 17 at approximately 11 pm, a fire broke out at our co-operative’s property, a piece of land measuring 230 square metres, which destroyed 13 shops,” he said.
“The estimated value of the products destroyed was US$15 000. The fire is believed to have been caused by a leaking five-kilogramme liquid petroleum gas tank.”
Cde Makopa thanked the union’s chairman Cde Simeon Nikisi, who quickly responded to the fire scene.
“We also appreciate the prompt response by the Fire Brigade team, who quickly extinguished the fire,” he said.
Cde Makopa indicated that the union has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the City of Harare under the Built, Operate and Transfer (BOT) system for 20 years.
“Mukuvisi Manufacturing Cooperation Union has already built seven blocks under the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT),” he said.
“Mukuvisi Manufacturing Cooperative Union has an approved plan in circulation at the city council, and once it is collected, the building of a two-storey mall will start.”
Commenting on the fire, Ward 4 Councillor Boniface Kundai Maburutse urged the traders to be insured.
