FORMER motor rally driver Robson Maganezi made a surprise appearance at the penultimate round of the 2013 Telecel Drag Racing Series at Donnybrook last Saturday where he drove a Subaru in his debut outing at this exciting motorsport event. South Africa-based Maganezi was last seen in action in a local motor racing competition when he took part in the Zimbabwe Challenge Rally in 2010 before he made “a disappearing act” from local motorsport only to resurface at last Saturday’s drag racing event at Donnybrook where he brought his two Subarus.
Maganezi was among 10 new competitors who took part in the penultimate event of the 2013 Telecel Drag Racing Series which once again drew an impressive turnout of over 2 700 spectators by late afternoon, as this motorsport event continues to grow in popularity.
At least 10 new competitors participated in various classes, an incredibly encouraging sign for the sport, with a few of these making quite an impression by taking home prizes in their respective classes.
Newcomers K. Franco (driving a Mitsubishi FTO) and B. Makomva (driving a Skyline) both won their respective classes and L. Murinda (driving a Mazda 626), Maganezi (driving a Subaru) and C. Sibanda (driving a Mercedes Benz CL600) were all placed in the top three in their classes.
Although competitor numbers overall were slightly down it was a great day’s racing and a terrific atmosphere. The slightly slower times reflected in the results were testament to the extremely hot weather on the day.
The popular end of day Eliminations event saw Libor Jira taking the title of “Fastest Eliminator Car” in his Nissan Skyline and Phil Archenoul the title of “Fastest Eliminator Bike” on his Suzuki GSXR1000, although the fastest car during qualifying racing was Mebs Kerbelker in his Subaru WRX Sti with a time of 12.236 before clutch problems put him out of the running in the Eliminator event.
Archenoul faced no stiff challenge in his class as his arch-rival Angelo Pereira failed to pitch up for last Saturday’s event as he was fixing his bike which he wants to take to South Africa to compete in a number of drag racing events there before the end of the year.
