Chibanda was speaking at the launch of the Magaya Sport tournament, which received a US$10 000 sponsorship package from NetOne.

The launch was held at Hwedza High School.
Chibanda said they are impressed to have such tournaments being held in Hwedza as it complements the program, which is run by SRC.
“The tournament is there for the development of the community and as SRC that is our thrust hence they complement each other. There has been lack of equipment in other areas but the people here work together and they have managed to source sport equipment on their own despite receiving little funding from us,” said Chibanda.

The tournament is expected to commence on June 15 at various venues and will be held over three months with the finals set for August.
The tournament is catering for the young and old and participants will take part in athletics, netball, soccer and tug of war. The tournament will start at ward level up to district level.

NetOne marketing manager, Ellen Muchemwa said the sponsorship is meant to develop the community.
“It’s our first time sponsoring this tournament. As NetOne we have got the obligation to give back to the community where we operate in. It’s our responsibility to give back. We also want to empower the community through sport especially the youths and children from schools eventually they may be selected to represent Zimbabwe in soccer and netball teams. As for the children we want to catch them young,” said Muchemwa.

“We will evaluate depending on the success of the tournament that is if it is well run and there is transparency and accountability,” said Muchemwa.
Main sponsor of the tournament, Dennis Magaya said they have decided to expand the competition throughout Hwedza as they seek to bring together the whole community.

“We launched this program three years ago and it has progressed well. When we started it was a smaller one in Hwedza North only but this year we decided to go to the whole district,” said Magaya.
Magaya said the involvement of NetOne would go a long way in promoting development of the community through sport.
