ZIMBABWE Saints 1976 Chibuku Trophy winning goalkeeper Zebron Magorimbo was buried at West Park Cemetery in Bulawayo yesterday. In their eulogies, mourners described him as a “magnet” who drew people from all walks of life together. Magorimbo, 59, died on Sunday evening at his Mzilikazi home after a long illness.

The football great got a big send off as hundreds of people that included relatives, friends from the football family, colleagues and members of his church attended a service at Doves Chapel.

“Many people just knew his name because he was a good goalkeeper. I can say he was a magnet because he drew people together wherever he went.

He promoted Bulawayo through his football prowess and made a lot of influence on people’s lives as a footballer and juniors’ coach,” said his former teammate, Philemon Dangarembwa.

Born in Bulawayo on March 20, 1955, Magorimbo attended Mzilikazi Primary and High schools.

He began his illustrious career at Zimbabwe Saints Under-14s, graduating to the first team in the mid 1970s.

It was in 1976 that Magorimbo was in the thick of things alongside the late Max Tshuma, Andrew Kadengu, Isaac Banda, Dangarembwa, Gibson Homela, William Sibanda, and Ben Makadzange that the club won its real first major title — the 1976 Chibuku Trophy, beating Bulawayo giants Highlanders 4-0.

Former Highlanders player Douglas Mloyi who was part of the team that played against Zimbabwe Saints in that cup final said that Magorimbo was a brave goalkeeper with a good character and never wanted to lose a match.

“Magorimbo was a very brave goalkeeper who played a great part in Zimbabwe Saints’ winning of the Cup in 1976,” said Mloyi.

Among the mourners were former Zimbabwe Saints executive members and trustees.
