MAGWEGWE High School were crowned Bulawayo Metropolitan girls’ Under-20 soccer champions at Gifford High School on Sunday.
They beat Masotsha High School 4-1 on penalties in the National Association of Secondary School Heads provincial final after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time on Sunday afternoon.
Six schools Nketa, Masotsha, Amhlophe, Montrose, Magwegwe and Northlea participated in the event.
With the win Magwegwe High School have qualified for the Nash finals that will be held in Marondera this Friday.
Magwegwe beat Amhlophe High School 4-1 on penalties to go through to the semi-finals after match ended goalless in regulation time. Both teams had got to that stage with a win each 2-0 over Northlea, so their clash was the group decider.
Sikhulile High School qualified to the semi-finals after Montrose were disqualified for failing to produce a team card as per tournament regulations.
In the semi-finals Sikhulile thrashed Amhlophe High School 3-1 to book a final berth and defend their provincial championship title.
Magwegwe won 4-1 on penalties against Nketa High School in the semi-final after both teams failed to score in fulltime.
The stage was then set for the final which Magwegwe High School won 4-1 on penalties over the defending champions Sikhulile.
Magwegwe coach Simbarashe Tinago said they were happy to be crowned Bulawayo champions and to represent the province in the finals.
“I’m happy we won today though it was highly competitive games but we progressed with bit of a luck as penalties can go either way,” said Tinago.
