AWARD-WINNING television series Magweja, from Magamba Network, is preparing to make its international debut on Zambian broadcaster Crown TV.
The series, which recently won Outstanding Screen Production at the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), will premiere today in Zambia.
It will be the first time a production from Magamba Network is going to be broadcast outside Zimbabwe.
Magweja was honoured for its compelling storytelling and cultural relevance.
It tells the gripping stories of artisanal miners and the realities they face in the country’s sector.
The series explores themes of survival and the human cost of mining, bringing to light voices which are often overlooked in mainstream narratives.
It is directed by award-winning playwright, actor and filmmaker Dereck Nziyakwi.
He said the recognition at the awards ceremony confirmed the universal appeal of the story.
He also believes that recognition has positioned the series as one of Zimbabwe’s standout screen productions and opened the door for its reach to extend beyond national borders.
“The NAMA recognition affirmed what we always believed that Magweja is a story that resonates far beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.
“Bringing it to Zambia through Crown TV is not just an expansion, it is a conversation we are proud to begin with a new audience,” said Nziyakwi.
Zambia is a fitting destination for the series given the country’s strong connection to mining, making the themes explored in Magweja particularly relatable to that country’s viewers.
The broadcast partnership also represents a major step forward for Magamba Network, as it continues to expand its footprint across the region through socially conscious storytelling.
As the month is also about celebrating women, the series brings out Eunice Tava who plays the character of Vicky in the series.
Tava has been cast in numerous Zimbabwean films and her talent has continued to shine through the film and television industry.
Tava is a renowned actress who has starred in several plays and short films.
She has directed productions including “Election Day,” “Colours of Dreams,” “Diamonds in Son’s Grave,” “Narratives from the Dark,” and “Blood Tongue.”
She has also featured in “Studio 263,” “Subaru D,” “Salon.Com,” “Sinners,” “Mirage,” “Chipo The Gift” series, and “The Story of Nehanda,” among others.
