SOUTH Africa’s veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj has been ruled out of the second Test against Zimbabwe after picking up a groin strain, a big blow for the Proteas ahead of Sunday’s clash at Queens Sports Club.
The 35-year-old tweaker suffered the injury while batting on day three of the first Test on Monday and will now head back home for scans and further assessment.
“Senuran Muthusamy has been drafted in as Maharaj’s replacement,” Cricket South Africa confirmed in a statement.
In another shuffle, Wiaan Mulder will lead the side in the absence of several regulars, as the Proteas aim to wrap up the series with a win.
There’s also no place for fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who was due to join the squad midweek. Instead, selectors opted to stick with the pace attack that rattled Zimbabwe in the first Test.
“The seamers earned another shot after an impressive performance,” CSA said.
All eyes now shift to the second Test and whether Zimbabwe can bounce back or if South Africa will tighten their grip.
