The long road that popular gospel music outfit Mahendere Brothers has travelled in their music career has been retold in video following the release of their DVD compilation titled “Mahendere Brothers Old Skool Videos”.
The collection, which the group started marketing on the streets a few days ago, comprises videos which they did in the past and which are taken off some of their award-winning albums.
Befittingly, Mahendere Brothers open the DVD package with one of their earliest hits, “Hupenyu Hwepanyika”, which propelled them to stardom while they were still in their green days.
In the video, the vibrant performers led by Amos Mahendere are seen in their tailcoats getting down to some serious dancing, a feat which earned them the title of “Vakomana Vema-bhachi” in music circles.
Those with a sharp memory will remember how the went to the extent of pleading with City Fathers to block a section a popular Harare area just to shoot one of their massive and major-hitting videos, and this is the same spirit that is felt upon watching this DVD in videos like “Mabasa Enyama”, which earned them a National Arts Merit Award gong.
The outfit had bagged a number of awards before especially with their videos. “Mabasa Enyama” is outstanding for the way that the artistes enacted what they were singing about in cinematic form such that the message is immediately hammered home.
The video could easily pass off as a work of film.
“Rumbidzo”, “Psalms 23”, “Pamwoyo Pamwoyo”, “Mumba MaMwari” as well as other bonus tracks make up the rest of the collection.
Apart from this project, their previous visual release was the DVD “Mahendere Brothers 2013 Collection”.
Some of their albums are “Hupenyu Hwepanyika”, “Psalms 23” and “The Good Shepherd”. Amos, Michael, Misheck and Akim make up the outfit supported by other members
