SUBJECTING her employer’s 10-year-old son to constant battering earned a Chikanga woman 70 hours of community service.

Nyembesi Masodzi Chirara (38) of Chikanga 1 in Mutare was recently convicted by Mutare magistrate, Ms Prisca Manhibi for contravening Section 89 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

She was convicted on her own guilty plea.

Prosecuting, Ms Sharon Chibvongodze, said on August 26, Chirara bashed the boy (name withheld) who is doing Grade Four at a local school, accusing him of breaking a key.

“Chirara was away when the boy reportedly broke the key. Upon her return, Chirara discovered that the boy had broken the key.

“Chirara force-marched the boy into his room. She locked the door from inside and ordered the boy to take off his shirt. She took a fern belt and assaulted him several times on the back,” said Ms Chibvongodze.

The court also heard that Chirara was in the habit of assaulting the boy.

“Chirara was also in the habit of assaulting the complainant several times on different occasions using wooden sticks, dustpan and metal objects all over his body,” said Ms Chibvongodze.

The boy sustained wounds due to the constant assaults and was taken to hospital for medical examination.
