HISTORY was made this morning when the maiden 30-minute Air Zimbabwe flight from Harare touched down at Grand Reef Airport in Mutare, marking a major milestone in preparations for the upcoming Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo that begins next Wednesday.

The flight is expected to boost Manicaland’s connectivity and cement its status as a key player in Zimbabwe’s tourism sector.

Speaking after landing and during the Harare-Mutare flights launch, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Honourable Felix Mhona, said the flight demonstrated Government’s commitment to developing the province’s infrastructure.

“This successful maiden flight is a reflection of the Second Republic’s vision to open up every corner of Zimbabwe. Grand Reef Airport is now a gateway to the Eastern Highlands, and we are confident that this development will stimulate business and tourism in Mutare and beyond,” he said.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Honourable Barbara Rwodzi, said improved access to aviation services was a game-changer for the sector.

“Air travel connectivity has always been a missing link for Manicaland tourism. Today’s landing signifies new beginnings. With this flight, our international buyers and visitors to the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanyai Expo will easily experience the beauty of the Eastern Highlands. This is our little Switzerland, and the world must see it,” she said.

Air Zimbabwe board chairperson, Dr Silvanos Gwarinda, described the return of flights to Mutare as a strategic development in reviving domestic air travel.

“As Air Zimbabwe, we are proud to reconnect Harare and Mutare through the skies. This route strengthens our commitment to domestic tourism, trade, and investment. We believe this launch will not only support the success of the Expo but also lay a strong foundation for sustained air services into Manicaland, ensuring that our national carrier continues to play its part in the country’s economic growth story,” he said.

The historic flight comes as Manicaland accelerates preparations for the expo that will be held from September 10 to 12, with authorities assuring that the province is ready to host international visitors.

The expo will showcase Zimbabwe’s tourism offerings, with special emphasis on positioning Manicaland as a premier destination.
