MANCHESTER. — In the end, Kobbie Mainoo was the only “untouchable” at Manchester United.
The club deemed Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana as the only untouchables not for sale in the summer of 2024.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe had marvelled at the picture of Garnacho, Hojlund and Mainoo, aged 19, 21 and 18 at the time, sat on the advertising hoarding celebrating Garnacho’s goal in the February 2024 win over West Ham.
The trio recreated it for a viral Adidas Originals commercial that was filmed at United’s fabled old training ground, The Cliff, ahead of the 2024-25 season.
A year later, Garnacho, Hojlund and Onana had gone and Mainoo maybe thought he was going. His request to leave on loan was blocked.
United were impressionable where Hojlund was concerned. One player of the month award in February 2024 merited an upgrade to the number nine shirt but Hojlund was never capable of living up to that number.
Ruben Amorim showed willingness to make it work with Garnacho, despite some ill-discipline. Amorim got it wrong by dropping Garnacho for the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham and Garnacho was in the wrong with his post-match hissy fit. That burned his bridges with United. — The Sun
