Maisha Health commemorates breast cancer awareness month

Maisha Health Fund is spearheading a campaign to improve awareness and treatment of breast cancer in the country as the world commemorates breast cancer awareness month.

In Zimbabwe, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women, according to official figures.

There were an estimated 2 000 incident cases and more than 1 000 deaths in 2020, though only a fraction of these patients are documented as presenting to care with a breast cancer diagnosis.

Maisha Health says it has ensured provision of adequate and comprehensive cover for breast cancer and other forms of cancers in appreciation of the level of care and treatment required, should a member be diagnosed with the disease.

The company, however, said it was important for women to constantly check for the signs and symptoms of breast cancer that may include presence of a lump in the breast, pain in the breast, swelling in areas near the breasts, discharge from nipple other than breast milk, change in the shape of the nipple and swelling under arm.

Men are also at the risk of contracting breast cancer.

“According to studies, early detection of breast cancer can increase the survival rates of the patient,” said the EcoCash Holdings medical insurance unit.

“As such, we are encouraging women to regularly conduct self-breast exams at home to determine the presence of lymph and other change in the shape of the breast or nipple, and also to go for screenings.”

Breast self-examination involves the  woman herself looking at and feeling each breast for possible lumps, distortions or swelling. It makes one become familiar  with the usual appearance and feel of one’s breasts.

Getting to know one’s breasts makes it easier to become aware of any changes.

Breast self-exam is done about three to five days after one’s period when breasts are less likely to be tender and swollen.

Maisha Health added that women at menopause should choose a particular day of the month when to do breast self-examination. Early detection of abnormalities gives the doctor a better chance to offer effective treatment.

“About a third of the most common cancers, including breast cancer can be prevented by eating a varied and healthy diet,  maintaining a healthy weight and regular physical activity.

“It is encouraged to eat a diet containing whole foods that a naturally grown and high in fibre,” said the popular Medical Aid.

“It is also important to avoid refined foods and highly processed foods as they are high in fats, sugars and salts. Instead concentrate on whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, poultry and fish.

“Also avoid being overweight or obese by exercising regularly at least five times a week for more than 30 minutes.”
Medical research has also shown that alcohol intake must be reduced, while tobacco smoking, sniffing or chewing are to be avoided at all cost. Doctors also encourage people to avoid chemical exposure such as pesticides.

“Managing stress effectively is another important aspect in the prevention of breast cancer as well as other cancers.

“Getting involved in relaxation classes and stress management techniques is one way of achieving this. Breast feeding is a protective factor – this is a common practice in Zimbabwe and must be encouraged,” added Maisha Health.
