RUGBY has long enjoyed a passionate following in Mutare, even if corporate support has often been scarce.
That landscape is set to change dramatically with this week’s announcement: Greenvest Minerals, through their sports agency Athletes Sphere, has committed to a ground-breaking three-year sponsorship of Manicaland rugby — a partnership poised to transform the game in the province.
The sponsorship, which takes effect immediately, will anchor this year’s Greenvest Minerals Manicaland Rugby League, and will be officially launched next Friday in Mutare.
With renewal options built in, the deal promises sustained investment and growth for the sport.
Under this partnership, Manicaland will field both men’s and women’s provincial sides to compete in regional and international 15s Tours, marking a significant milestone for local talent.
The fast-paced 7s rugby format will also benefit, with the province set to host a high-profile regional and international 7s tournament featuring global legends of the game.
Beyond the pitch, the initiative is expected to elevate Manicaland as a premier sports tourism destination, drawing visitors, boosting local businesses, and showcasing the province’s vibrant sporting culture.
For players, fans, and the community alike, Greenvest Minerals’ investment signals, not just sponsorship, but a revival — a chance for rugby in Manicaland to thrive on both regional and international stages. Greenvest Minerals and Athletes Sphere Global managing director, Gerald Sibanda was delighted with this development.
“I am very happy to give back to rugby. This sport gave me a lot in my 15-year career. I am delighted to give back to the game that gave me so much joy and prestige in my sporting career.
“I look forward to our Investment in this region for all youth, men, women and also 7s rugby. We will support Manicaland to see through the success of this vision shared by both parties. All I can say is that I am delighted,” said Sibanda.
Manicaland Rugby Board representative, Casper Bandi, said the sponsorship is set to be a turning point for the game of rugby in Manicaland Province.
“I would like to thank Greenvest Minerals and Athletes Sphere Global for coming on board and partnering Manicaland Rugby. This is exactly what the game of rugby has been yearning for.
“I am sure that they (Greenvest Minerals) have seen that we are a bankable institution, and I am sure this is going to change lives of boys and girls in Manicaland Province.
“I am sure everyone is looking forward to the upcoming 15s season and 7s season later on in the year. I am sure this sponsorship will be the turning point of something big in Manicaland,” said Bandi.
