NAIROBI. – Jamii Telecoms Limited will finally resume work on a major multimillion-shilling project in Kenya following the resolution of disagreements with the Nanyuki County government. The company had started laying a fibre optic cable before disagreements, which ensued last month, between the company and the county officials.
The officials demanded the Internet Service Provider pay US$34 483 as way leave fee much to the outcry of potential customers who had already paid up the connection fees in anticipation of the high-speed internet.
“It will not be fair at all for the government to deny Laikipia people their right to better and faster communication due to some slight misunderstandings to be ironed out even as the work progresses,” said Laikipia governor’s principle assistant, John Wambugu.
Jamii Telecoms Limited had earlier agreed to meet the cost of damages that would arise in the process of laying the fibre cable.
Laikipia County Education and Information Communication executive director Bosco Akaale said the county government might consider waiving the way leave fee if JTL offered free connections to some public institutions.
However, ICT Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i had earlier warned that such a move by the county governments would impede realisation of the Vision 2030 that is hinged on ICT development.
Many business institutions and private users are taking up the fibre internet connections due to its reliability and speed a move the government says keeps the country on the right track in pursuit to accomplish the Vision. – CAJ News.
