Praising Jesus, both at home and abroad, takes a heart devoted to Christ. For England-based Zimbabwean gospel singer Isaac Mthabisi Mpofu, known on stage as Isaac Mtha Eland, this mission is at the core of his music. His latest single, Makatendeka, is a heartfelt expression of gratitude to God and a tribute to his late mother.

Isaac, who was once a lead vocalist for the acclaimed Bulawayo group Vocal Extraordinaire (Vocal Ex), is no stranger to gospel music lovers. During his time with the group, he led hits such as Umlilo and the popular Eyethu Indaba.

Reflecting on his musical journey, Isaac shared that his passion for gospel music began during his school days.

“I grew up singing at church, but it was during high school that I became serious about music. Joining the choir at Tsholotsho High School, which won awards in choral competitions, marked the beginning of my journey. After high school, I joined various gospel groups in Bulawayo, including Creme Voices and Jesus Lifestyle Rock Band, before spending seven years with Vocal Ex, where I was groomed and developed,” he said.

Relocating to England did not deter Isaac from pursuing his calling. Instead, it allowed him to explore a solo career, leading to the release of four singles.

“My fourth single, Makatendeka, was released on November 13, a date I chose to honour my late mother, who was born on that day. The song reflects God’s faithfulness in my life. The chorus, ‘Nyasha dzenyu dzakawanda, dzinogara nekusingaperi’ (Your mercies are abundant, everlasting), speaks to how God showed up when I felt hopeless after my mother’s passing. Looking back, I see how He changed my life and sent destiny helpers,” said Isaac.

Among his previous releases, Ngiwabonile made waves, spending three months on Skyz Metro FM’s Top 10 Gospel Hits chart. Isaac, who composes most of his songs, shared how his music often reflects true-life experiences.

“My song Ungithwele Yonke Indlela is a testament to the challenges we face daily and how God carries us through.”

Living and creating music in a foreign country has presented its share of challenges.

“Language barriers and the high cost of recording music have been major hurdles. It’s also difficult to find producers who understand my sound, especially when they don’t speak my language or are miles away. Coordination can be challenging, with conflicting schedules often forcing me to work remotely with people back home. Recording studios are also expensive,” he said.

Despite these challenges, Isaac remains committed to spreading the word of God through his music.

“All my songs aim to give hope and encourage faith in God. They carry messages inspired by personal experiences and daily life, reminding people to trust in Him at all times,” he said.

Isaac Mtha Eland continues to inspire through his dedication to gospel music, proving that passion and faith can transcend borders and unite hearts in worship.
