The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has potential to contribute positively in the successful implementation of Zim-Asset’s value addition and beneficiation cluster, Commissioner-General (Retired) Major-General Paradzai Zimondi has said. Speaking during a tour of Harare Central Prison workshop facilities recently, Comm-Gen Zimondi said the organisation was endowed with human resources, land and opportunities for it to become a leading correctional service and a provider of invaluable skills and services in the region and beyond.
“ZPSC has active workshops, which could go a long way in assisting inmates by equipping them with life survival skills, while at the same time the community also stands to benefit immensely as the various skills learnt by the inmates in the workshops would assist them to live as productive and law abiding citizens upon release from prisons,” he said.
He said by accessing services rendered by the workshops in the form of welding, panel beating, spray painting, motor vehicle repairs and servicing, book binding upholstery and tailoring, the inmates would have played a leading role in ensuring Zim-Asset’s success.
Comm-Gen Zimondi, however, bemoaned the state of prison workshops, saying they had obsolete equipment that resulted in such workspaces not being fully equipped for the rehabilitation of inmates’ skills.
He called upon the corporate world to enter into partnerships with Government and help turn around the fortunes of the inmates upon release.
“I just want to encourage other players in civic organisations and the corporate world to come on board and make a difference by supporting the rehabilitation of inmates’ entrepreneurship programmes,” he said.
