RESIDENTS from Ward 7 in Bulawayo are hosting an event today at Thabiso Centre to empower youths with skills and equipment to fight drug abuse.
The event is set to tackle challenges of drugs, gender-based violence and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The theme is “unlocking talent to curb drug abuse.” Councillor Thandiwe Moyo said the event is aimed at fighting drug abuse in the area.
“This event is very crucial in our area because drug abuse is on the rise and it is worrying that young people aged 15 are now part of this drug menace. The issue is worrying, this event will help us identify the real challenges that have increased these cases of drug abuse and come up with possible solutions to deal with this challenge,” she said.

Councillor Moyo highlighted that they secured funds to keep the youths out of the streets.
“The area is witnessing drug infestation, our youths are becoming drug addicts so this motivated the local peace committee in the ward to source funds and organise a sports and arts gala which is set to engage the youths on drug and substance abuse,” she said.
She indicated that a number of prizes will be offered at the event.
“There are a number of prizes and items that are set to be offered at the event and these entail sports kits, balls, artistic regalia and drums. These items are set to keep the youths off the streets by ensuring that they are occupied and that they gain skills in sports and arts,” she said.
Councillor Moyo added that there was a need for everyone in society to join in the fight to end the menace.
“We are saying no to drug abuse and we desire a multi-sector approach to ensure that this menace comes to an end as it is destroying the lives of our children,” she said.
