Makokoba tourney on the cards

VEZULWAZI Art and Sport Foundation and Mountain Peak Art from Makokoba will run a soccer tournament in a bid to raise funds for the production of a documentary addressing critical societal issues such as drug and substance abuse, child sexual abuse and gender-based violence.

The documentary, titled Uncle Mbokodo aims to raise awareness and provoke discussions on these important topics.
The shooting of Uncle Mbokodo is scheduled to begin next month.

Artistic director, Tsoka Kwenda revealed that a soccer and netball tournament will be held to raise funds for the documentary’s production, he also said that he is aware that through sports and arts they are able to achieve the main goal which is raising awareness among the youth and help curb societal ills that come with drug and substance abuse.

“We will be holding a soccer and netball tournament to fundraise for the film shooting project of Uncle Mbokodo. The documentary seeks to highlight the issues of gender-based violence, child sexual abuse and to also raise awareness among the youth of the effects of drug and substance abuse.

“This is a community-building initiative as the documentary will be showcased for free at community centres. We aim to address matters that affect us as a community and suggest solid solutions to our problems,” said Kwenda.

In addition to the documentary’s screening, the group plans to invite qualified facilitators to hold question-and-answer sessions after the tournament to engage the community further and provide additional support and information.

Kwenda also appealed for donations from individuals and companies to support the documentary project.

“We do not have resources for the soccer and netball tournament hence we are appealing for donations from the corporate world. Any donations in cash or kind will be greatly appreciated,” said Kwenda.

He could not commit to how much they are targeting to raise for the project.

The date for the tournament is yet to be set.
