FORMER Harare Sports Club’s speedy back-liner Shayne Makombe is happy to be involved with the Zimbabwe Sables rugby team that will take on Zambia on Wednesday.

The France-based Makombe who is expected in the country this afternoon, will be enjoying a fruitful decade as a Sable and believes they have a good team that is capable of upstaging any opponent.

“I recently used a letter from the Zimbabwe Rugby Union to get access to the stadium and gym and I have put in some honest work for a few weeks now and I am confident that I will keep improving.

“If I get a chance to play it will be a much needed return to action after a very long time and I will use the opportunity to apply our systems and improve on my match sharpness again.

“Fitness wise it’s been the toughest period in my career thus far having to rely on home workouts with France being in a lockdown state since last year and my league also cancelled until next September.

“The squad is a new group with so much exciting talent. I am so excited to meet and play with my team mates old and new. This is my tenth year as a Sable and I am so privileged to have this opportunity.

“I have been following the Zambian league and I think the match will be quite physical. On our end it will be an opportunity to apply all the work that’s been done behind the scenes for a very long time now and that is exhilarating,” said Makombe.

Meanwhile, president of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, Aaron Jani, has sent his condolence messages to the Sandako family following the death of Edson “Eddy” Sandako.

Sandako, who collapsed and died this morning, was an employee of the Union and was seized with the upcoming composite friendlies against Zambia and Welwitschias of Namibia.
