MAKOMO Resources has acquired a $14 million coal washing plant aimed at upgrading the quality of coal for the market, an official has said. In an interview yesterday, Makomo Resources general manager Mr Samson Mabvura said the plant was imported from South Africa.
“Yes it is very true we have acquired a coal washing plant from South Africa for about $14 million. We will start processing coal at our Entuba Coalfields in Hwange before the end of the year,” said Mr Mabvura.
He said Makomo Resources, which is the country’s second largest coal producer, had also added an additional two additional crushers to increase output.
“We now have three crushers and we have a capacity of producing 300 000 tonnes of coal per month but we are however producing about 200 000 tonnes per month currently,” he said.
“This is part of our expansion programme and our first step to process some of the coal we are mining into coke.”
The company is one of the five private firms which the Government gave licences to mine coal in the Matabeleland North province.
Last month the company purchased twelve 777Bs dump trucks, eight 785Bs dump trucks and four water bowsers worth $13 million.
The mine also produces coal peas for small power stations, cobbles for tobacco farmers, rounds and nuts for the cement manufacturing industry.
