Makonde Rural District Council in Mashonaland West Province is satisfied with the progress that has been made so far in line with Government’s recommended 100-day Rapid Response Initiatives. In an interview, the district administrator, Mr Aspinas Runesu said most projects were nearing completion.
“The progress made as of now is tremendous. We allocated $25 000 for the construction of Mpata Clinic and $22 000 was spent so far. The project is now 95 percent complete. We are confident that by April 2 the clinic will be operational,” he said.
Mr Runesu said education was also a key area, which they had prioritised.
“There is a contractor constructing a block at Matoranjera Primary School and we set aside $35 000 for the project, which is now 75 percent complete. We are also empowering locals whom we are contracting and employing from the very same communities where we are embarking on projects.
“At the construction of Matoranjera Primary School block four builders and a local contractor were roped in while 10 community volunteers are assisting,” he said.
Mr Runesu said the district, as part of complementing Government’s efforts in supplying safe water to the people, was drilling boreholes for the communities.
“In terms of boreholes, we have drilled 15 so far at a cost of about $19 500. We still have at least $200 000 for the drilling of more boreholes,” he said.
Mr Runesu said council is also building a bridge in Mhangura.
“In Nyamakanda Ward 5, we set aside $24 000 and mobilised materials for the erection of a bridge and the progress is also good. Community participation is very high specifically for this project,” he said.
He, however, bemoaned excessive rains that were experienced over the past few days, which had delayed progress on the projects.
