MAKONDE Rural District Council has proposed the establishment of the first public boarding school for Mhangura Constituency.
The constituency currently has one private boarding school.
The local authority aims to open a boarding facility next year at Ridziwi High School, located three kilometres north of the former copper mining town, which is now defunct.
A fundraising and groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a female hostel block took place last Friday at the school.
Former students, politicians, and businesspeople pledged their support for the successful construction of the hostel and the launch of the boarding facility.
The ceremony coincided with the school’s Speech and Prize Giving Day, as well as a graduation celebration for Makonde Rural District Council chief executive officer Dr Paradzai Munyede, who earned a PhD in Peace and Governance from Africa University.
“Boarding schools emphasise academics and provide students with a structured and supportive environment that fosters academic excellence. Students can receive both academic and moral guidance from teachers and peers,” said Dr Munyede.
“Additionally, boarding schools often possess better learning resources, such as libraries, laboratories, and technology, which can enhance the overall learning experience.”
Mhangura legislator and Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora commended the local authority for proposing the introduction of a boarding school in the area.
Makonde District Schools Inspector, Mr Solomon Katoma said that the establishment of the boarding facility aligns with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.
The district currently has a few boarding facilities, including Chinhoyi Tech High School, St. Rupert’s High School, Matoranjera High School, and Sinoia Primary School.
It also has an elite school, Lomagundi College, which offers boarding facilities for both primary and high school learners.
