Government plans to drill four boreholes in each constituency across the country, raising expectations that water challenges affecting some parts of Makonde District will soon be a thing of the past, a senior Zanu-PF official has said.
Addressing a party inter-district meeting in Chinhoyi at the weekend, Zanu-PF national secretary for environment and tourism Cde Prisca Mupfumira said Government — through the Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate — will lead the programme to provide clean and safe water.
“District chairpersons should identify areas, which have a shortage of boreholes so that they benefit from the initiative. I will, however, chip in to provide some boreholes in other areas as I know the four boreholes will not be enough.”
Cde Mupfumira said it was also essential for villagers to consider using part of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to repair dysfunctional boreholes.
The borehole drilling initiative will be spearheaded by the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa).
Environment, Water and Climate Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri recently urged legislatures to submit four priority boreholes site areas, so as to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of supplying clean water by the 2030s.
