DYNAMOS ‘keeper Tatenda Makoni has become every striker’s nightmare.
Cool under pressure, fearless on the line and virtually unbeatable from twelve yards, he’s now the king of penalties in Zimbabwean football.
After another jaw dropping display in the Chibuku Super Cup semi-final against Highlanders, Makoni’s name is being mentioned alongside greats like Tafadzwa Dube, Tendai Tanyanyiwa, and the late George Chigova.
DeMbare are heading into their third straight Chibuku final.
And, once again, it’s Makoni’s gloves that got them there.
So where did it all begin?
Makoni’s story started in the most unexpected manner.
Before football, he was a basketball player.
One day, DZ Academy coach Watson “Robino” Marowa ran short of players and dragged him from the court to fill in.
“Growing up, he was a basketball player, but we wanted a goalkeeper that day and he chipped in,” said Marowa.
“We started using him in two positions, goalkeeper and striker. He excelled in both.”
That twist of fate unlocked a rare gift.
“We’re not surprised by his penalty saving ability,” said Marowa.
“When he was with the Under-16s, he once saved all five penalties at the National Sports Stadium. We won 2–1 on penalties.”
Makoni credits his calmness to those early lessons.
“Since I was in the Under-13s at DZ Academy, coached by Marowa and Effort ‘Fila’ Murindagoma, they gave me tips, I’m still using today,” he said.
“And it’s paying off.”
Now a key man for Dynamos, his coaches believe the best is yet to come. “With his potential, we’re sure he’ll one day play for the Warriors,” said Marowa.
“As DZ Academy, we’re proud to see him make it to the top.”
From a basketball court to the big stage, Makoni’s rise is the stuff of dreams. And, with DeMbare still fighting to beat the drop, his magic hands might yet save their season, literally.
