MIGHTY Warriors player Rutendo Makore has been named as one of the past heroines of the Cosafa Women’s Championship ahead of this year’s edition, which will be staged in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa, from September 15-26.
She joins the list with the likes of Barbra Banda (Zambia), Tabitha Chawinga (Malawi), Noko Matlou and Veronica Phewa (South Africa), Racheal Nachula (Zambia) and Zenatha Coleman (Namibia).
Makore has been the leading Zimbabwean women’s football player in recent years and led the team’s strike force in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Her proficiency in front of goal saw her being signed by Spanish side Sporting Huelva.
She top-scored in the 2017 Cosafa Women’s Championship with 10 goals, including four against Madagascar and a hat trick against Malawi.
She was also on target in the 2017 championship final against South Africa in the Mighty Warriors’ 2-1 loss.
For this year’s edition, the Mighty Warriors have been drawn in Group B alongside Botswana, Tanzania and South Sudan.
They will be hoping to improve on last year’s disastrous performances that saw them losing all their three group matches and returning home early. — @innocentskizoe
