Malaika heading for sensational split

The cracks started showing last year when singer Tshedi Mholo opted to perform as a solo artiste at some gigs, without Bongani Nchang.
In revenge, Nchang also performed at high-profile events alone.
The showdown came after Nchang made a splendid showing as a solo artiste at Sun City, Rustenburg, during the South African Sports Awards’s function three weeks ago.
Mholo says the last time they performed as Mailaka was at the beginning of May, but she has been contacted by concerned fans about the duo performing as individuals.
“People think I’m no longer interested in Malaika and this worries me because it’s Bongani who has been performing alone and it’s a bad reflection on both of us,” says Mholo.
“I don’t know what excuse to give our fans anymore because I am also in the dark.”
Mholo adds that even their dancers have been acting strange and “secretive”.
She says when they have a gig, she arranges the wardrobe for herself, her partner and the dancers, but Nchang “goes on stage without our usual costumes and no one has asked me anything about clothes”.
“I don’t know who to trust anymore, it’s really a complicated situation,” says Mholo.
Nchang says they are still together as a group but they have both been doing gigs in their personal capacities.
He says he has also been getting calls from their fans.
“Many of our fans have been asking, telling me that Tshedi had been performing in Cape Town and also appearing alone on TV,” says Nchang.
He says promoters at gigs make the mistake that Malaika is performing when sometimes it is just him alone or Mholo alone.
“But look, we still have not discussed anything about breaking up and our album will be out soon,” says Chang.
This week Mholo posted on her Facebook page that she will be recording: “I’m recording on Monday. Watch the space”.
When her fans asked if she is recording as Malaika or solo, she replied: “Tshedi Mholo is recording with an international artiste.”
According to a source close to the situation, the duo has not been on speaking terms for a while, and only meet to work on their soon to be released CD.
“There has been tension between the two,” says the source.
Another source says the drama started after Nchang went through personal problems with his wife.
The source says his marital issues also affected his career to a point where he could not perform at some gigs.
“Tshedi had to eat and survive. Hence she started doing performances on her own.”
The source says Nchang had admitted that he had allowed his marital problems to affect his career.
“But Tshedi told him it is too late because she has been working and doing her own thing as well. Tshedi has a family and a child to support,” says the source.
Mholo denies she ever performed solo and says that as the Unicef ambassador she does a lot of emceeing jobs, and she always lets her Malaika management know.
Their manager Mike Maswanganyi said he is not involved with their solo careers as long as they don’t perform Malaika songs. – Sunday World.
