GURUVE District has been hit by a malaria outbreak which has so far claimed two lives, while more than 25 people have tested positive for the disease. The epidemic is suspected to be a result of the high concentration of mosquitoes in stagnant water bodies
During a recent tour of several clinics by Guruve South Member of National Assembly, Cde Patrick Dutiro, it was revealed that a number of people had been diagnosed with malaria, with two adults having died at Kemusasa Clinic.
At Bepura Clinic in Mudhindo Ward 12, more than five patients tested positive on Wednesday alone, while staff members at Shinje Clinic said they had recorded 10 cases in February and 15 in March.
Complicated cases were referred to Guruve District Hospital.
Cde Dutiro appealed for more medication to fight the disease.
“Government is in the process of mobilising more resources in the form of mosquito nets and chemicals to spray houses,” he said. “All clinics have malaria tablets, but with the increase of patients more supplies are needed.
“We encourage people to visit their nearest clinic if they suspect to have contracted malaria. We also encourage our health workers to conscientise communities on the outbreak of malaria.”
Several cases have also been reported at Berres Post, Shinje and Kemusasa.
