Government has so far established 146 information kiosks or Community Information Centres (CICs) across the county in an effort to increase awareness in computer technologies, especially among rural communities. The world is fast turning into a digital society where nearly everything is done online.
The target is 250 such kiosks.
Over 10 700 people have since undergone free basic computer training at the centres across the country, according to the Postal
and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ).
POTRAZ head of marketing and international communications Mrs Sibongile Muteyiwa told The Herald on Friday last week that 146 containerised CICs had been established across the country since the inception of the project in 2017.
She said plans were underway to establish more CICs.
“More CICs will be put in place to meet the computer information needs of the nation,” she said.
“Of the 146 information kiosks, 79 are fully operational and are offering free training in Internet and ICTs. In fact, Government is forging ahead with the project.
“Ordinary citizens, including farmers in the remote parts of the country, will significantly benefit from the project. They will have access to a variety of information, especially on the best farming practices, weather patterns, health,politics and tourism, among others.”
