THREE more people have succumbed to malaria in Zimbabwe bringing to 32 the total number of deaths as the country continues to grapple with the disease.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care disease surveillance report show that from the beginning of the year, 14 865 cases have been recorded in different parts of the country.

“The disease surveillance report for the week ending 21 April 2024 shows that 1 929 malaria cases and three deaths were reported this week. Of those, 191 of the reported cases were from under five years of age,” read the report.

Manicaland recorded 3 325 cases, Mashonaland East (1 885), Mashonaland Central (7 561) and Masvingo (568).

The four were the worst affected provinces, which translates to over 90 percent of the recorded cases.

Malaria is a deadly disease caused by parasites and it is spread to humans through bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.

Signs and symptoms of severe malaria include jaundice in white palms, which is a sign of anaemia, very high temperature, severe body weakness (unable to sit, passing very little urine or not passing urine at all and severe vomiting).

Zimbabwe last week joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Malaria Day under the theme “Health Equity, Gender and Human Rights”.
