Mall robbery leaves shoppers in shock

CAPE TOWN. — Shoppers were left shaken after armed robbers stormed into the upmarket Cavendish Square in Cape Town, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash and gold coins yesterday. At around midday three robbers entered a coin retail store, Scoin, in the mall where they held staff at gunpoint. Western Cape police spokesperson André Traut said robbers managed the flee the scene with cash and gold coins.

According to a witness, who was sitting at a nearby restaurant, the alleged robbers were seen firing shots as they made their escape.

The witness, who did not wish to be named, told News24: “I was sitting with my back to what was happening and I heard a noise and suddenly everyone around me was diving for cover under the tables . . .”

The witness said no-one had been injured, but her elderly friend, who had seen a gunman running away, was shaken up.

A Scoin employee confirmed the incident, but declined to comment further.

Traut said no arrests have been made and the matter is being investigated.

In October last year, after a spate of mall robberies in the Western Cape, police said that they had identified number of suspects.

The public was urged to help police ensure that the suspects were apprehended as soon as possible.

Traut said at the time that 20 suspects linked to cellphone and jewellery store heists since the beginning of April. — News24.
