A 20-YEAR-OLD Gwanda man has appeared in court facing allegations of raping his three-year-old cousin. The man, who cannot be named to protect the minor, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe who remanded him in custody to 25 October. She advised him to apply for bail at the High Court because of the seriousness of the allegations.
Allegations by the State were that on an unknown date but during the period extending from February to October this year, the three-year-old girl was left in the custody of the accused by her mother.
The accused invited the complainant to his bedroom where he raped the toddler. It is further alleged that the accused continued raping the girl whenever she was left in his custody.
The matter came to light last week on Monday when the girl’s mother was bathing her and saw a brownish discharge from her private parts.
The woman questioned her and the girl revealed that she was being sexually abused by the accused. The man was arrested and taken to hospital where he was examined by a doctor.
The examination revealed that he had the same discharge as noticed on the girl’s private parts on his own private parts. The girl was referred to Gwanda Provincial Hospital for a medical examination.
Mr Jefta Nyikadzinashe represented the State.
