A WOMAN from Bulawayo has approached the court claiming $250 for the upkeep of her two grandsons from their father who abandoned them when her daughter died.
The case was heard by Bulawayo magistrate Ms Ulukile Mlea.
Ms Maurine Mhlanga told the court that her daughter who is the mother of the two minor children died.
She said since then she has been taking care of her grandchildren without the assistance of their father, Vusumuzi Masuku, but did not state when her daughter died.
The granny said she was seeking an order compelling Masuku to buy food, clothes, medication and pay fees for the children who are both attending school.
Ms Mhlanga said it’s been months since she last saw him.
“Your Worship, I am not the mother of the children but I am the grandmother who is living and taking care of them,” said Ms Mhlanga.
“I am a teacher. l earn $500, my grandchildren are nine and five years old. They both need school fees, food, clothes and a lot more. I am also taking care of other people that is why l’m claiming $250 so that I can manage.”
Masuku did not turn up in court and the magistrate granted the maintenance application.
“Respondent in default, respondent ordered to pay maintenance for two minor children in the sum of $250 with effect from December 31 this year. Money to be deposited into applicant’s account,” said the magistrate.
