A 30-year-old man from Zaka in Masvingo allegedly fatally struck his friend when he missed the intended target following a misunderstanding at a beer drink.Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero confirmed the incident, which happened on Saturday at around midnight.
He identified the deceased as Charles Kuduba of Chereche Business Centre. Insp Zhanero said his body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital for a post-mortem.
He said the police have since arrested three people in connection with the killing.
“The trio is in police custody assisting us with investigations. They will appear in court soon facing murder charges,” he said.
Insp Zhanero said Kuduba was drinking beer at Chereche Business Centre with his friend, Fredrick Chafadza, Kudakwashe Mushamhuri and Kizito Mutomboza.
“Mushamhuri accused Chafadza of gossiping about him but Chafadza professed ignorance about the accusations,” he said.
Mushamhuri became angry and the two fought.
“When Chafadza and Mushamhuri were fighting, Kuduba and Mutomboza intervened and the pair stopped fighting. After they were restrained, Chafadza picked up a log intending to strike Mushamhuri but missed and struck his friend Kuduba on the head. Kuduba bled profusely from the nose and mouth,” he said.
Insp Zhanero said Kuduba was rushed to Musiso Hospital where he was referred to Masvingo General Hospital before further referral to Parirenyatwa in Harare but died on the way.
A report was made to the police leading to the arrest of the trio.
