Government has handed over radiotherapy equipment worth $5 million to Mpilo Central Hospital. Speaking at the handover ceremony where songbird Sandra Ndebele-Sibindi was unveiled as the hospital’s ambassador, the institution’s Director of Operations, Mrs Duduza Moyo, said the radiotherapy equipment will soon be installed.

“We hope that the installation of the equipment will be completed by the end of the year so that patients start benefiting as from January next year,” said Mrs Moyo.

She for a long time, the radiotherapy department has not been functional, a development that saw cancer patients travelling to Harare to seek services.

Mrs Moyo said reviving the radiotherapy department would enable the hospital to regain its status as a regional health centre as it used to treat patients from neighbouring countries.

Turning to the appointment of Ndebele-Sibindi as the hospital’s ambassador, Mrs Moyo said they took into consideration that the singer was an important figure with a lot of influence.

“We realised that she has a lot of influence as she can inspire both the old and youths alike. She plays important role in health services as she is an ambassador of Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and National Blood Service of Zimbabwe which are both linked to health delivery,” said Mrs Moyo.

As the hospital’s ambassador Ndebele-Sibindi’s role is to mobilise resources for the refurbishment of the hospital. Ndebele-Sibindi called on stakeholders to come on board to change the hospital’s fortunes.

After touring the hospital, Ndebele-Sibindi said her wish was to see the theatre room re-equipped as it was not operating at full capacity.
