A Binga man has been arraigned before the courts facing charges of assault after he beat up a fellow villager for driving cattle through his fields.
Vusumuzi Munkombo Mguni (49) of Lusulu Village in Binga pleaded guilty to the charge of assault when he appeared before Binga resident magistrate Mr Stephen Ndlovu last week for assaulting Bishop Moyo.
Mguni told the court that he was trying to protect his crops. “Your honour complainant’s action to pass through my field angered me so much as I feared for my crops as you know we are still harvesting. I only assaulted him to deter him from using my field as a passage to his destination,” said Mguni.
According to State prosecutor Mr Lovemore Siamunda, on 17 May in the morning, Moyo was driving his cattle through Mguni’s fields on his way to Chipale grazing area.
This did not go down well with Mguni who was hiding in the nearby bushes.
Angered by Moyo’s actions, Mguni loaded his catapult with a stone and shot the complainant on the forehead.
He sustained a swollen forehead. He reported the matter to the police leading to Mguni’s arrest.
Moyo was referred to St Luke’s Hospital for treatment where a medical report was prepared and used in court as evidence.
Mguni was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment of which six months were suspended for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence within that period.
The remaining six months were also suspended on condition he completes 210 hours of community service at BMC Primary School in Lusulu.
