A SECURITY guard at Jilongwe Mine in Gwanda allegedly assaulted his wife with barbed wire and detained her for five days to conceal the resultant injuries after being questioned about his alleged infidelity.Majaha Maphosa, 25, attacked his wife Rugare Muchivete, 22, at midnight after she asked why he was cheating on her.
“On August 15, 2013 at around midnight, a misunderstanding ensued between the accused and complainant over accused’s infidelity. This did not go down well with the accused who later assaulted the complainant with clenched fists four times on the face and several times with a barbed wire on her back.
“After assaulting the complainant the accused locked the complainant in the room so that no one could see that the complainant was injured,” said prosecutor Sikholiwe Ncube.
The court heard that Maphosa detained his wife for five days.
“The accused opened the door for the complainant on August 20 after the complainant’s mother paid a visit to accused’s residence and realised that the complainant was injured. The matter was reported to police, leading to the accused’s arrest,” the court was told.
Maphosa was arraigned before magistrate Sheila Nazombe to answer to charges of physically abusing his wife.
He admitted assaulting his wife but denied using a barbed wire.
“Your Worship, I do admit that I assaulted my wife but I used a whip. It is also not true that I locked her in a room after the assault,” said Maphosa.
He was remanded in custody and will next appear in court on May 13 for trial.
