An ailing Seke woman was left with a fractured arm and a dislocated leg when her husband attacked her with a spade following an argument.
Patience Chidare (38) of Murisa Village in Seke was unwell and decided to spend some of the money her husband, Givemore Charehwa (41), had left in her custody, to seek treatment.
When Chidare’s mother visited on April 30, Charehwa told her that her daughter was wasting his money. Chidare explained how she had spent the money but this did not appease Charehwa.
Chidare’s mother resolved to take her daughter home. Irked by the decision, Charehwa grabbed a spade and attacked his wife with it. As a result of the assault, Chidare sustained a fractured arm and dislocated leg.
A police report was made, leading to Charehwa’s arrest.
Appearing before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo, Charehwa admitted to assault charges and was handed a five-year jail term.
A year was suspended on condition of good behaviour.
In sentencing him, Mr Murendo took into account that Charehwa should consider himself lucky for not being charged with attempted murder.
“You used a serious weapon to attack your wife who was unwell at the time. A medical report indicates that there is a possibility of permanent injury.
“In cases of violence, women and children are always found at the receiving end and it is the courts’ duty to protect them,” said Mr Murendo.
Mr Taurai Chikuvadze prosecuted.
