A 19-year-old man from Gwanda allegedly assaulted and stabbed a rival suitor several times on the head, face and left arm with a broken bottle before cutting his left ear in a row over a girlfriend. Innocent Ncube of Village Eight in Makwe area told Gwanda magistrate Sheila Nazombe on Saturday that he severely assaulted Peace Kasepa, age not given, for flirting with his girlfriend.
Ncube and Kasepa were drinking together in one of the drinking spots in Makwe when the misunderstanding ensued.
Ncube accused Kasepa of trying to snatch his girlfriend and the latter reacted with anger.
“Your Worship, the complainant and I had a quarrel over a girl, my girlfriend. I have been in love with the girl for almost a year now,”
said Ncube. “The problem started when the complainant approached me telling me that he was also in love with my girlfriend.
“That is when the fight started and I gave him a chase from the business centre. I did not waylay him as is alleged.”
Nazombe told Ncube that he had unnecessarily landed himself in trouble in a matter that could have been solved amicably.
She said: “If she loves you, she should have been here but where is she? You don’t fight over a girl. You should have talked to her. Now you see the trouble you are in.”
Ncube, who is now facing charges of attempted murder was not asked to plead but was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
He was remanded in custody to January 6, 2014.
The State represented by Getrude Zvidzai alleges that on December 26 last week at Makwe business centre, Ncube waylaid Kasepa on his way home and attacked him using a broken empty beer bottle.
The court heard that Ncube left Kasepa for dead after stabbing him several times on the head, cut his left ear, stabbed him twice on the face and several times on the left arm.
After the alleged offence, Ncube took to the heels and disappeared but was later arrested.
