AN adulterous 44-year-old polygamist from Gokwe who sought to quench his sexual desires on his niece has been slapped with a 30-month jail sentence after he impregnated his sister’s 18-year-old daughter after bedding her for over six months.

Lovely Tshuma and his niece Progress Sibanda all of Time Village under Chief Nemangwe in Gokwe South were arraigned before Gokwe regional magistrate Mr Christophe Maturure charged with having sexual intercourse within a prohibited degree of relationship.

The two were convicted on their own pleas and Tshuma was sentenced to 30 months in prison six of which were suspended on condition of good behaviour. Sibanda was, however, lucky to escape jail when she was sentenced to 26 months which was wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour.

For the State, Mr Vengesai Matavire told the court that the two had a sexual relationship within a prohibited degree of relationship during the period extending from June 2016 to 25 December the same year and indulged in sexual intercourse several times.

Mr Matavire said sometime in June last year on a date unknown to the prosecutor, Tshuma proposed love to his sister’s daughter to which she consented.

He told the court that the two had sex several times since then until Christmas Day. The court heard that Sibanda informed Tshuma that she was pregnant for him and he informed his second wife Dorcas Nemangwe and asked to investigate if Sibanda was telling the truth.

Ms Nemangwe interrogated Sibanda and she revealed that she was pregnant for Tshuma and they have been seeing each other for about six months. Mr Matavire also told the court that Ms Nemangwe went and informed Sibanda’s mother, Rebecca Tshuma of the matter. He said Rebecca went and reported the matter to the police, leading to the two’s arrest.
